The Root Chakra
Root Chakra:
- Sanskrit Name: Muladhara
- Color: Red
- Element: Earth
- Sense: Smell
- Location: At the base of the spine
As the first major chakra in our energy system, the root chakra forms the foundation for physical life.
Just as we need a solid foundation to build a house, we need a strong and balanced root chakra to feel grounded in this world and access the gifts the higher chakras have to offer. This chakra appears as a beautiful lotus flower with four petals. In the center of the lotus is a yellow square symbolizing the earth element of this chakra. The root chakra is red in color, often depicted as deep crimson or vibrant ruby red.
The primary focus of this chakra is survival and ensuring that our basic needs are met, including shelter and food. These needs can also include money, as we need financial security in life to take care of ourselves and our family. On an emotional level, when this chakra is nourished and healthy, we feel a sense of belonging. We feel safe in our own body and in the world. We feel secure, stable, strong, and grounded. We know deep down that we will always be able to take care of ourselves, both physically and financially.
Physical symptoms of a blocked root chakra include reproductive problems and sexual dysfunction. An underactive root chakra can also affect the skeleton, particularly the back; if someone feels undervalued and unsupported in life, this can manifest as lower back problems. A blocked root chakra can manifest as physical problems such as arthritis, constipation, and bladder or bowel issues, or emotionally through insecurity about finances or our basic needs and well-being. When aligned and open, we feel grounded and secure, both physically and emotionally.
