The Throat Chakra
Throat Chakra:
- Sanskrit Name: Vishuddha
- Color: Blue
- Element: Akasha
- Sense: Hearing and Expression
- Location: The center of the throat
The throat chakra is our center for all things related to communication, creativity, and self-expression. The Sanskrit word Vishuddha derives from the word Shuddhi, which means pure, and the root word Vi, which adds more power and meaning to the word. Thus, Vishuddha loosely translates to “especially pure.” It is said that the throat chakra must be exceptionally clean and clear to function optimally.
In Hindu tradition, this chakra is depicted as a lotus flower with sixteen petals. In the center of the flower is an inverted triangle containing a white, moon-like circle. This circle symbolizes the key element of this chakra, Akasha – the ether or the universal etheric field that permeates all life. The petals are inscribed with sixteen golden Sanskrit vowels corresponding to mantras and musical tones.
While all chakras require a certain level of balance and openness for a strong energy body, the throat chakra is considered especially significant. Various ancient texts suggest that physical and spiritual success in this life depends on the openness of our throat chakra. It is believed that meditating and healing this chakra can lead to the attainment of siddhis or “superpowers,” granting us access to memories of past lives, grounding in the present, and glimpses into our future.
As one might expect, this chakra is associated with our ability to communicate verbally. Voice and throat issues, as well as problems in the surrounding area, such as the teeth, gums, and mouth, can indicate a blockage. Misalignment may also show up in dominant conversations, gossiping, speaking without thinking, or trouble expressing one’s thoughts. When aligned, we speak and listen with compassion and feel confident knowing we are true to ourselves in our words.
